WoW Forever Shaman Guide: Best Spec, Leveling Build, Talents and Rotation

Updated · Patch: Launch (post 2–3 November changes)

Quick answer: Shaman got some of the biggest buffs of any class right before launch. Level as Enhancement: Stormstrike now hits for 150% weapon damage on a 6-second cooldown, Maelstrom Weapon procs twice as often, and Mental Dexterity turns Intellect into Attack Power. At 60, Restoration is a top group healer with Chain Heal and the new Riptide, Elemental finally has the damage to match its burst thanks to big Lightning Bolt buffs, and Enhancement is a strong melee spec. For the first time, Alliance players can be Shamans too, as Dwarves.

Is Shaman good in WoW Forever?

Yes, and it's in a great spot. The 2 November notes were almost all good news: Lightning Bolt's top rank hits 80% harder, Lightning Overload now triggers 30% of the time, Stormstrike does more damage more often, Maelstrom Weapon triggers twice as often, and Flurry and Mental Dexterity both went up. Shocks were put back to their stronger Classic values, too.

Totems are much less of a chore. Call of the Elements (level 20) drops up to 4 totems at once from your totem bar, and later Call of the Ancestors (30) and Call of the Spirits (40) give you two more saved setups. Totemic Recall returns your totems for some mana back, and Totemic Call pulls them to your position.

At a glance:

  • Roles: melee damage (Enhancement), ranged damage (Elemental), healer (Restoration), plus an off-tank option with Rockbiter
  • Best leveling spec: Enhancement
  • Hardest part: mana for Elemental, and keeping the right totems in the right place
  • Best for: players who like being useful in every group and having a tool for everything

Shaman strengths and weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Do everything. Heal, deal melee or caster damage, and even tank dungeons while leveling.
  • Totems help the whole group. Windfury, Strength of Earth, Mana Spring and Tremor make any group stronger.
  • Tough while leveling. Mail armour, a shield option and Healing Wave keep you alive, and Reincarnation saves wipes.
  • Huge burst. Stormstrike into Earth Shock, or Lightning Bolt with Lightning Overload, can delete enemies.

Weaknesses:

  • Totem management. Totems have to be placed and moved, though Call of the Elements makes this much easier now.
  • Mana for casters. Elemental runs dry in long fights without Convection and Elemental Focus.
  • Weapon luck. Enhancement depends heavily on finding a good slow two-hander.

What's new for Shamans in WoW Forever?

  • Maelstrom Weapon (Enhancement): your melee hits can make your next Lightning Bolt faster and cheaper, stacking up.
  • Rage of the Farseer (Enhancement capstone): 30% more attack speed for 25 seconds.
  • Mental Dexterity and Mental Quickness (Enhancement): Intellect becomes Attack Power (150%) and spell power (30%).
  • Improved Stormstrike (Enhancement): Stormstrike gives you mana regeneration while casting and can reset its own cooldown.
  • Shamanistic Focus (Enhancement): Shocks and Lightning Shield cost 45% less.
  • Lightning Overload (Elemental): a 30% chance for Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning to cast a free second copy.
  • Lightning Mastery (Elemental capstone, formerly Elemental Mastery): faster Lightning Bolts and no Chain Lightning cooldown for 15 seconds.
  • Call of Thunder replaced the planned Lava Burst: 5% more crit on Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning.
  • Earthbound (Elemental): Earthbind Totem roots nearby enemies for 5 seconds when you drop it.
  • Riptide (Restoration capstone): a heal over time that makes your Chain Heal 25% stronger on that target.
  • Water Shield (level 20): orbs of water that give you mana back when you're hit or your spells crit.
  • Mindfulness (Restoration): 50% of your mana regeneration continues while casting.
  • Fire Nova (level 12): a burst of fire around your active Fire totem.
  • Totem bar: Call of the Elements, Call of the Ancestors and Call of the Spirits, plus Totemic Recall and Totemic Call.

Which Shaman spec should you pick?

Enhancement (melee damage). The leveling spec and a lot of fun. A slow two-hander with Windfury Weapon, Stormstrike, Flurry and Maelstrom Weapon-powered Lightning Bolts. You can heal yourself between pulls and wear mail, so you're very hard to kill while leveling.

Elemental (ranged damage). Big burst with Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Earth Shock and Lightning Overload. The launch buffs made its damage a lot more consistent. Mana is the limit, so Convection and Elemental Focus matter.

Restoration (healer). Chain Heal is one of the best group heals in the game, and Riptide makes it even stronger. Add Mana Tide Totem, Healing Stream Totem and Nature's Swiftness, and Resto is a healer every raid wants.

Best Shaman leveling build in WoW Forever

Level as Enhancement with an Elemental dip.

Enhancement Leveling Build (19/32/0)

Talent order, roughly:

  1. Thundering Strikes (5) for crit, then Ancestral Knowledge (3).
  2. Mental Dexterity (3), so your Intellect becomes Attack Power.
  3. Elemental Weapons (3) and Shamanistic Focus.
  4. Flurry (5) and Stormstrike.
  5. Mental Quickness (2), Improved Stormstrike (2) and Spirit Weapons.
  6. Maelstrom Weapon (5), then Rage of the Farseer at level 40.
  7. Finish in Elemental: Convection (5), Concussion (5), Elemental Devastation (3), Reverberation (3), Call of Flame (2) and Elemental Focus.

Key levels to look forward to:

  • 1: Lightning Bolt, Healing Wave and Rockbiter Weapon.
  • 4: Earth Shock and Stoneskin Totem.
  • 6: Earthbind Totem.
  • 8: Lightning Shield and Stoneclaw Totem.
  • 10: Flame Shock, Flametongue Weapon, Searing Totem and Strength of Earth Totem.
  • 12: Fire Nova, Purge and Ancestral Spirit.
  • 20: Ghost Wolf, Frost Shock, Frostbrand Weapon, Water Shield, Healing Stream Totem and Call of the Elements.
  • 25: Stormstrike (talent).
  • 30: Windfury Weapon, Reincarnation, Grounding Totem and Call of the Ancestors.
  • 32: Windfury Totem and Chain Lightning.
  • 40: Chain Heal, Call of the Spirits and your capstone.

How to level as Enhancement: drop your totems with Call of the Elements, pull with a Lightning Bolt or Flame Shock, and hit Stormstrike as soon as they arrive (it boosts your next Lightning Bolt or Earth Shock). When Maelstrom Weapon stacks up, fire off a fast, cheap Lightning Bolt. Use Earth Shock to finish or interrupt, and Windfury Weapon once you have it at 30. Heal yourself with Healing Wave between pulls instead of eating, and use Totemic Recall before you move on to get mana back.

Enhancement guide: rotation and tips

  • Weapon: a slow two-hander with Windfury Weapon. Slow weapons get the most out of Windfury and Stormstrike.
  • Priority: Stormstrike on cooldown (now every 6 seconds), Earth Shock or Flame Shock right after it, and Lightning Bolt whenever Maelstrom Weapon has stacked up.
  • Rage of the Farseer for big fights, and keep Flurry rolling with crits.
  • Totems: Strength of Earth and Grace of Air for melee groups, Windfury Totem for your melee party, and Searing or Magma Totem for extra damage.
  • Mana: Shamanistic Focus, Water Shield and Improved Stormstrike keep you going.

Elemental guide: rotation and tips

Elemental Build (32/10/9). It takes Lightning Overload, Call of Thunder, Elemental Fury and Lightning Mastery, plus Thundering Strikes and Ancestral Knowledge from Enhancement and Tidal Focus and Mindfulness from Restoration.

  • Rotation: Lightning Bolt is your main spell. Keep Flame Shock on longer fights, and use Earth Shock to interrupt or add burst.
  • Chain Lightning costs a lot of mana but hits several targets. Save it for packs, or for Lightning Mastery, which removes its cooldown for 15 seconds.
  • Lightning Overload gives every bolt a 30% chance of a free copy, and Elemental Fury doubles your crit bonus.
  • Mana: Convection, Elemental Focus (free spells), Water Shield and Mana Spring Totem. Downrank Lightning Bolt when you're running low.

Restoration guide: healing priority

Restoration Build (0/11/40). It takes Riptide, Mana Tide Totem, Nature's Swiftness, Purification, Healing Way and Restorative Totems.

Healing priority:

  1. Riptide on the most damaged player (12-second cooldown). It also makes your next Chain Heal on them 25% stronger.
  2. Chain Heal for group damage. It's your best spell.
  3. Lesser Healing Wave for quick single-target heals.
  4. Healing Wave (Improved Healing Wave makes it faster) for big heals on the tank.
  5. Nature's Swiftness plus Healing Wave for an instant emergency heal.

Tips:

  • Mana Tide Totem restores mana to your whole group, so use it whenever you're low in a long fight.
  • Healing Stream Totem and Mana Spring Totem should always be down in dungeons.
  • Water Shield returns mana when you get hit or your heals crit.
  • Tremor Totem removes fear, and Poison Cleansing Totem and Disease Cleansing Totem handle the rest.

Totems

  • Earth: Stoneskin (melee damage), Strength of Earth (Strength), Earthbind (slow), Tremor (removes fear) and Stoneclaw (taunts).
  • Fire: Searing (single target), Magma (packs), Flametongue (spell power for casters) and Fire Resistance.
  • Water: Healing Stream, Mana Spring, Poison Cleansing, Disease Cleansing and Frost Resistance.
  • Air: Windfury (melee), Grace of Air (Agility), Grounding (absorbs a spell), Windwall and Nature Resistance.
  • Set up your totem bar once, then one click of Call of the Elements drops them all.

Weapon imbues

  • Rockbiter Weapon (level 1): more melee Attack Power and extra threat. Your early leveling imbue, and the tanking imbue.
  • Flametongue Weapon (level 10): extra Fire damage on every hit. Great for Elemental and Restoration on a one-hander, and good for leveling.
  • Frostbrand Weapon (level 20): Frost damage and a slow. Useful for kiting and PvP.
  • Windfury Weapon (level 30): a chance for 2 extra attacks. The best Enhancement imbue on a slow two-hander, and Elemental Weapons makes it 40% stronger.

Shaman tanking

Shamans can tank leveling dungeons, and some players do it all the way:

  • Rockbiter Weapon adds threat to your melee attacks, and Spirit Weapons gives you a chance to parry.
  • Use a shield. Block and armour make a big difference, and Anticipation and Toughness in Enhancement add dodge and Stamina.
  • Earth Shock generates big threat and interrupts casters.
  • Stoneclaw Totem taunts nearby enemies, and Fire Nova or Magma Totem help hold packs.
  • Lightning Shield adds damage and threat when you're hit.
  • It's best for leveling dungeons. In raids, Warriors, Paladins and Druids are the main tanks.

Shaman leveling tips

  • Drop a cheap totem set while questing. Strength of Earth and Searing Totem are enough for most single pulls, and Totemic Recall gets you some mana back afterwards.
  • Heal yourself, don't eat. A quick Healing Wave between pulls is often faster than sitting down.
  • Use a low rank of Earth Shock to interrupt casters. It costs almost nothing and works just as well.
  • Ghost Wolf from level 20 makes travelling much faster before you get your mount.
  • Frost Shock stops runners from fleeing and pulling their friends.
  • Lightning Shield adds free damage while enemies hit you.
  • Reincarnation from level 30 lets you come back after a bad pull without a corpse run.

Shaman dungeon tips

  • Pick totems for your group. Windfury and Strength of Earth for melee, Mana Spring and Flametongue Totem for casters, and Healing Stream for everyone.
  • Tremor Totem against fear, and Poison Cleansing Totem or Disease Cleansing Totem when those debuffs are flying.
  • Purge enemy buffs, and interrupt with a cheap rank of Earth Shock.
  • Grounding Totem eats a dangerous enemy spell.
  • Reincarnation brings you back after a wipe, so the Shaman can always rez the group with Ancestral Spirit.

Best stats for Shamans

Most guides agree on roughly these priorities:

  • Enhancement: weapon damage (a slow two-hander), then hit and crit, then Strength, Agility and Intellect (Mental Dexterity turns it into Attack Power).
  • Elemental: spell hit, then spell damage, then crit and Intellect.
  • Restoration: healing power and mana regeneration, then Intellect and crit.

Best race for Shaman

  • Orc (Horde): Blood Fury for burst and Hardiness against stuns. Great for Enhancement.
  • Tauren (Horde): War Stomp and extra health.
  • Troll (Horde): Berserking for haste, which is good for every spec.
  • Skyborne (Horde, Windshaper): the new race, with Wind Blessed haste and Walk on Air.
  • Dwarf (Alliance): new in Forever, and the first Alliance Shaman. Stoneform is excellent in PvP.

Best professions for Shaman

  • Mining and Skinning: easy gold, and Skinning pairs with Leatherworking for mail and leather gear.
  • Herbalism and Alchemy: mana potions for Elemental and Restoration.
  • Engineering: great for PvP.
  • First Aid and Cooking: cheap healing, and stat food.

Shaman PvP tips

  • Earth Shock interrupts a cast. Even rank 1 works, so keep a cheap low rank on your bar.
  • Frost Shock slows, and Earthbind Totem (with Earthbound) roots enemies around you.
  • Purge removes buffs from enemies.
  • Grounding Totem eats an enemy spell, and Tremor Totem counters fear.
  • Nature's Swiftness plus Healing Wave can win a fight from any spec.
  • Ghost Wolf helps you run and chase.

Common Shaman mistakes

  • Using a build from before the 2 November changes. Lots of beta videos still show Lava Burst and old Stormstrike numbers.
  • Dropping totems one by one. Use Call of the Elements.
  • Leaving totems behind when you move. Use Totemic Recall for mana back, or Totemic Call to bring them with you.
  • Using a fast weapon as Enhancement. Slow two-handers are much better with Windfury.
  • Spamming Chain Lightning on a single target as Elemental. It's very expensive now.

Can Alliance play Shaman in WoW Forever?

Yes. Dwarf Shaman is a new race and class combination in WoW Forever, so Alliance players can be Shamans for the first time. Horde Shamans can be Orc, Tauren, Troll or Horde Skyborne.

Was Lava Burst removed from WoW Forever?

Yes. Lava Burst was removed in the final notes before launch and replaced by Call of Thunder, which increases the critical strike chance of Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning by 5%.

What does Call of the Elements do?

What is Riptide in WoW Forever?

Riptide is the Restoration capstone. It heals a friendly target over 15 seconds and makes your Chain Heal 25% stronger on them. It has a 12-second cooldown.

Is Enhancement Shaman good for leveling?

Yes. Enhancement is the fastest way to level a Shaman, especially after the launch buffs to Stormstrike, Maelstrom Weapon, Flurry and Mental Dexterity. You can heal yourself between pulls, and you wear mail.
